BMI is committed to supporting and nurturing the future of roofing, and we show this commitment by our investment into training at the BMI Academy, as well as holding the BMI Apprentice of the Year event to provide invaluable experience and life skills for roofing apprentices from all over the UK and Ireland.
Each year we look for roofing apprentices to come together at the annual Apprentice of the Year competition and test their skills in front of a panel of industry judges. The winner’s receive a generous cash prize of £1,000 and the prestigious title of Apprentice of Year, as well as three years’ worth of training support from the BMI Academy.
The competition opens for entries in February (during National Apprenticeship Week) and the judges look at several aspects of their apprenticeship, from roofing skills to teamwork, with a focus on business acumen, presentation and marketing skills. The competition is open to apprentices nationwide in both pitched and flat roofing.
Successful applicants will be invited to the Apprentice of the Year final, held each year in the summer at the BMI Academy in Gloucestershire.
The theme changes each year, with the 2024 theme being Building New Horizons. Up to 20 finalists are shortlisted each year and we ask entrants to demonstrate how their experiences have shaped their learning requirements throughout their career, how they achieved learning a skill and how they have worked with others to develop their skill set.
Both flat and pitched roofing apprentices are invited to submit entries online by 26th April. Up to 20 finalists will be selected in May and invited to compete in the two-day final at the BMI Academy in July where the winners will be crowned.
Entrants must be a roofing apprentice or student currently working towards qualified status. The Competition is open to residents of the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland aged over 16 years.
"It's a great feeling to have won and be able to say that I'm the Apprentice of the Year, especially when there were so many great apprentices taking part this year. It has been a great opportunity and I couldn't recommend it more highly to other apprentices thinking of taking part in the future." said Charlie
"To have won is a big surprise and it's an amazing feeling. The competition has really pushed us all and I feel like I've progressed so much just in the last couple of days, so I'm really happy to have been recognised and be taking home the top prize." said Euan
Like many industries, the roofing sector is experiencing a skills shortage. This is why we’re committed to supporting the future workforce through initiatives like Apprentice of the Year and our work at BMI Academy.
Follow along as we stay in touch with our apprentices to see where their roofing career takes them, from joining industry associations to advancing in their careers and more
